Pillow for a Princess: Fold Over Pillowcase Method

This weekend I showed you a blanket and pillow I made for my niece who was visiting. I showed you the simple steps I used to make the blanket and here is the instructions for the simple, 20-minute pillow I made for her as well.

I don't know when I first saw this method for making a pillow, but it's quite possibly the easiest method for making a simple pillow cover. So here's a brief tutorial on how to make quick and easy pillow covers.

Step 1: Measure pillow. Mine was a 12-inch square

Step 2: Cut one fabric piece using this formula
Width (short side of not square): Width of pillow plus 1 inch (Mine was 13 inches)
Length: (long side of not square) Length of pillow times two, plus 4 inches (Mine was 28 inches)

Step 3: On long side of fabric, fold over 1/2 inch, then 1/2 inch again. Pin and sew.
Repeat on other side of fabric.

Step 4: Find middle of fabric and mark. count out 1/2 the length of the pillow and fold over with right side of fabric together. Pin in place. From the middle count out the same 1/2 length d fold over other side of fabric. There should be overlap in the ends of the fabric at about the center part. Pin and sew the top and bottom of the cover.

Step 5: using the hole with overlapping fabric, flip the pillow case right side out.

I've made quite a few pillowcases like this for our throw pillows on the sofa. I change them out for holidays or take them off to wash. It takes about 20-30 minutes to make one, though I usually make a pair. Enjoy making pillows ot match blankets and quilts!

Until our next cup of tea ...
