Red, White & Teal? Trying Something Different for Independence Day

The 4th of July Weekend is upon us and I, like many others spend the days leading up to a holiday weekend dreaming of all the projects I'll work on, but in reality I won't spend as much time in the craft room as I'd like. I think Prince Charming and Lil Monkey have other plans, though they prefer not to tell me until they are ready to leave. {sigh} When did I lose control of the family schedule?

They are two peas in a pod, if you ask me. Both enjoy spontaneous activity versus planning a weekend out. I try to make plans but then I'm the only one who actually thinks we will stick to it as a family.

This weekend, I am going to think ahead. You may remember I picked up this pre-printed quilt block when my Dad was in the hospital. Partly as a way to give me something to do while I sat there for 10-14 hours a day, but also partly, because I haven't done one of these pre-printed quilt blocks before. When my first or second niece was born (there were 2 within months of each other), I made a crib blanket and pillow set for her out of one of these pre-printed, pre-packaged sets, but that was 17 years a go. {gasp!} I found them using it for a dog bed when I visited a few months later and went back to cross stitching home stuff such as kitchen towels and did a set of pre-printed pillowcase, but then never did another.

When I stood in that Hobby Lobby looking for something to keep my hands and mind busy as my grandmother and I sat at the hospital, I decided to try another one.

So this is the pattern I got. It's 6 panels of this Interlocking XX Colonial. I really am excited to see how it turns out, though I'm not sure how many panels I want to do. There at 6-18" panels in each package, so I may just use it as a medallion for a quilt and make borders to increase the size without a lot of stitching time needed. Hmm, we'll see ...

Since I'm not a fan of red, as the picture on the pattern showed, I decided to go with this deep teal, DMC 3848. I love it! I'm really excited about teal right now, so I was excited to get started on a project using it even though NOTHING in my house even remotely coordinates with it. Oh, well. I'll keep you posted on the project!

Until our next cup of tea ...
