Celebrating in Style

What a busy week! If you follow The Teacup Cottage Blog on Instagram or Facebook, you may have learned that Friday was my birthday, and there were so many activities this past week.

The Friday before my birthday I joined my mom and grandmother (step-father's mom) at a local quilt shop, Cactus Quilts in Texas City, Texas. They were starting their 2016 Sampler. This year's Quilt is Turning Twenty's Seeing Stars Block of the Month. (Yes, I signed up for another BOM since my last post!!

I'd never done one of these before, much to my mom's surprise. Apparently, this is something quilt shops have been doing since the 80's or 90's. Its a great way to meet new quilting friends as everyone works on their block. Each month participants will get a fabric kit and pattern for the next month. After the first month, if you show up with completed blocks, you get the next month's fabric free! You can potentially only pay for the pattern and first month's fabric! It also keeps you accountable for finishing a project - I need all the help I can get!

This project will be made with fabrics from Andover's Little House on the Prairie-Walnut Grove and Moda's Primitive Gatherings Collection . These fabrics are a little out of my comfort zone, so I'm excited to try something new!

While we were at Cactus Quilts we did a little shopping of course. I got some fabrics for projects I'm working on, by my grandmother also got me these two Mini Charm Packs by Moda.

The Lulu pack is of course filled with pretty pastels, a favorite of mine. But the Miss Kate set is kind of retro style fabrics, something that I don't have an eye for AT ALL. Luckily, Moda saved me the trouble of trying to match fabrics. Late one evening this past week, I wanted to work on some sewing but wasn't in the mood to pull out a big project, so a few stitches later I had made this nearly 16-inch square. Next time I go back to Cactus Quilts, I'll try to find some yardage of a few of these fabrics and make a border for a cute table topper.

Throw in birthday breakfasts, dinner with friends and some celebratory shopping over the past week, you can see why I haven't had time to blog. Stop by for more updates on the TWO blocks of the month projects, some Quiltsmart Projects, and more!

Until our next cup of tea ...
