I love mug rugs! They are like little mini quilts for your cup and make a great decoration when simply laying about. This year for Valentine's Day, a group of military stitches (sewing and quilters) at White Walls Needle Facebook page did a mug rug swap. There were about 17 of us who participated and the mug rug "teases" kept us all on the edge of our seats.
We each submitted a photo of our favorite mug for inspiration and mailed them by Feb. 8. I made a mug rug for my recipient and fell in love so I made one for myself as well. I used both circle and heart ZigZapps by Quiltsmart to make them. (Gift was the heart version, mine was the circles.)
Making them were fun and easy. The fabric was leftovers from projects in the past but I loved the polka dots together. After layering the batting and backing and sewing around the ZigZapps, I thought I'd try a ripple effect, sewing 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch from the heart and circles. I think I fell in love with the look and may be repeating it on random projects in the future. All in all, I was a fun project!
On Feb. 10, I received my mug rug in the mail. It was hard not to open it right away. I tucked it away and this morning excitedly opened it while waiting for my coffee to brew. I had submitted a photo of my Alice in Wonderland tea set for inspiration and was NOT disappointed!
I received this beautiful batiks and heart mug rug.
Earlier this week, I got a message from another friend in the group who said she had made some rug mugs for family members with the Quiltsmart heart ZigZapps I'd sent her, and included this photo ...
I guess its not hard to "love" making mug rugs when Quiltsmart makes it so quick and easy. I'm off to enjoy more coffee with my new mug rug. Have a great Valentine's Day!!
Until our next cup of tea ...
